'The Canvas' explores the relationship between two seemingly unique architectural typologies - the theatre and the crematorium, within the confines of the Sydney CBD, attempting to stitch together these programs through the shared idea of drama. The introspective nature of both activities is brought to the fore, from the use of long processional staircases which traverse from the front of the building to the rear, to the use of narrowing corridors which expand to rooms to create a stage-like experience. The facade, a large, functional stainless steel chimney, serves as a metaphor for change - the building is a vehicle for reflection and action. Perforated bricks are also featured along the facade, fading as the building rises to represent notions of transformation. Each space works to achieve a dramatic experience that encourages introspection, a common trait between the two programs.
