The unique boarding houses of South-East Asia create significant isolation for foreign workers, grouped together in a foreign nation with no connections. This project, entitled 'Welcomed Overstay', embraces the opportunities for creating communities within these housing complexes. Split into male, female and family units, the site is strategically divided into three neighbourhoods, which are able to house the function of these individuals. Smaller units invite people outside into collective spaces, facilitating a connection between these isolated individuals that rejects the prejudice that these complexes are hostile and isolating to their inhabitants. The climatic considerations of the site (Jakarta, Indonesia) are also considered with the use of thermal mass and shading, to enhance the comfort offered to this vulnerable population.
